Spring Is Almost Here

If you live in a midwestern state, you occasionally have a few days of sunny, warmer weather. Spring is almost here and there is no reason not to get started on the new season. Do you ask, What can I do? This entire article will give suggestions on what you can do!

The very first thing that should be accomplished is raking as soon as the ground is thawed. It is extremely good for your turf. It is amazing but after raking, you will notice your lawn starting to green.

Next, you should clean your turf. This can be done with just a hose or a hose sprayer with a mixture of 8 oz. dishwashing detergent, 8 oz. mouthwash and 8 oz tobacco juice. Warning: Stay away from your peonies with this mixture. Everything else is a go. Set your hose sprayer at 1 oz per 20 gallons of water.

You can also spray your trees with the aforementioned mixture. If you have trees which require trimming, i.e ...suckers, branches bumping into each other, etc., do this early because maple trees tend to sap and there may be others as well.

Now, it is time to fertilize your turf. This time of year a crabgrass preventer should be the diet. Crabgrass germinates early, although it doesn't develop until around August.

You say the ground is soft. Good time to edge around all the sidewalk, driveway and curb. As the more stable spring-like weather approaches, you will have your edging under control.

Next, you could trim or shape your shrubs. Doing this early will give them more time to recover from their haircut and provide more beauty later.

My next recommendation is to take some of the heavy cover off flower beds, especially those where daffodil, crocus and tulip are planted. You can also cut back the long leftover stalks of chrysanthemum, hosta and day lily. If you have a problem with any of these blooming, now is the time to treat to ensure proficient blooming.

For your indoor greenhouse, you could start your annuals. Put a small amount of water in a small bowl and add one drop of dishwashing detergent. Let your seeds soak for a few minutes and drop them into your pot of dirt. You could use a tweezers to space the seeds exactly where you want them. Water thoroughly. I prefer to use peat pots because there is very little plant shock when transplanted outdoors and I water thoroughly before I set my seeds. Some seeds should be soaked over night and even scratched with a nail file. Once planted, cover and keep moist until seedlings appear. Most plants will germinate in darkness faster than if exposed to light. By starting your plants indoors, they will be stronger once you transplant them into their outside location.

Some crops actually germinate quickly when using the indoor method. Squash and melon are examples. Lettuce is a crop which should be planted directly outdoors and it is a cool weather crop so it will do best when the temperature has not warmed up to stinking hot. Another crop best planted outside is carrots. Cat droppings are a good way to keep the rabbits away from your outside seedlings. Do not put the droppings directly on your seedlings, make a circle around the plants. You only need to do this while the plants are young and tender.

Mix perennials and annuals in your flower garden. Perennials (do not die off from cold weather)will fill the gaps before your annuals become prolific and always give you a supply of flowers at various stages of the growing season.

As spring is almost here, you can get a head start on your outside work and breath a little easier knowing you have your gardening under control.
